GHUCCTS KL2 Scholar, Dr. Christina X. Marea's new publication "Navigating Homelessness Assistance While Pregnant: A Rapid Qualitative Research-to-Policy Collaboration in Washington, DC"

Georgetown University's School of Nursing shared the news of Dr. Christina X. Marea's published work on May 30, 2024, in the journal Health Equity with her collaborators.

Dr. Marea, a GHUCCTS KL2 Scholar and former TL1 Postdoctoral Trainee is a certified nurse midwife and Assistant Professor in the Georgetown University School of Nursing (GUSON). Currently, Dr. Marea is investigating the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a 12-month model of postpartum care to address the negative health effects of structural racism for birthing people in Washington DC.

This new study, conducted in Washington, DC with residents who experienced homelessness during pregnancy and in partnership with DC Health and the Community of Hope, underscores the urgent need for policy and practice change to support vulnerable populations at the intersection of homelessness, pregnancy, and racial inequity. Dr. Marea’s research exemplifies our prioritization of innovative translational science to address urgent unmet needs by leveraging boundary-crossing partnerships to accelerate impactful changes advancing health equity.  Her work, embedded within the DC Health Office of Health Equity’s philanthropically-funded “DC Calling All Sectors Initiative,” directly influenced strategic policy and practice recommendations and paved the way for a new model of collaboration across sectors. This initiative exemplifies our shared commitment to bridging structural gaps and addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.  Congratulations to Dr. Marea and her multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary academic-government-FQHC team.
