Research Grand Rounds: "Developmental plasticity and language reorganization after pediatric stroke"

Speaker: Elissa L. Newport, PhD

Elissa Newport is Professor of Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine and Director of the Center for Brain Plasticity and Recovery at Georgetown University, where she leads both the Learning and Development Lab and the Pediatric Stroke Research Project, a collaboration which also includes investigators from MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital, Children’s National, Johns Hopkins and Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania. The mission of the Brain Plasticity and Recovery Center is to develop approaches to restore brain function caused by neurological damage and disease, in conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and dementias.

Dr. Newport’s highly impactful collaborative and discipline-spanning clinical and translational research is currently supported by the NIH and the AHA and she is recipient of an extraordinary list of honors, including elected membership in the National Academy of Sciences. Her talk will focus on recent studies of plasticity and recovery from pediatric stroke.
